What a vibrant city! Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and the cultural center of the country. The birthplace of the tango is, like the dance itself, captivating, seductive, and bustling with excited energy. Atmospheric old neighborhoods are rife with romantic restaurants and thumping nightlife, and Buenos Aires' European heritage is evident in its architecture, boulevards and parks. Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of super retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards. She is referred to as the “Paris of the South.” Buenos Aires is a good jumping off point to visit Antarctica or the Patagonia region. The flight is 12 hours from Miami and the time is two hours ahead of the Eastern time zone.

We had a four day stay in Buenos Aires, preceding our Antarctica cruise.
Highlights included a full-day tour at an Estancia in San Antonio de Areco about an hour drive into the pampas from Buenos Aires. We enjoyed a tour of the historic village before horseback riding, lunch and demonstrations of life in the pampas (ranches) at "El Ombu de Areco."
We also attended a fun evening event. It started with an aroma class and a mixology lesson. That was followed by a class on how to make empanadas and then a full Argentine meal with "mate" and alfajores. Great audience participation.
Seeing the tango dancing in the streets was a real treat!
We met our tour the third day and had a guided city tour including the famous Recoleta Cemetery and Palermo. The tango show that evening was wonderful!
We had a very early flight to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago surrounded by the breathtaking Andes Mountains. We toured and hiked Tierra del Fuego National Park before embarking our ship. See the next post for our trip in Antarctica!
