We visited Sydney for three days and saw most of the major sites. Sydney is a wonderful stopover on the way to New Zealand if time is limited. It is a 15 hour flight from Los Angeles. You leave on day one and arrive day three. It is a thousand miles west of New Zealand and a three hour flight to Auckland. Sydney is a major metropolitan city with a population of almost 5 million. The people are very helpful and fun. Sydney offers great public transportation with a beautiful harbor. Activities abound around this harbor.

New Zealand is a very diverse country offering tropical rain forests and glaciers within a mile of each other. It has high peaked mountains, low plains, and active volcanoes. We drove the North and South islands - what a great way to see this beautiful country at our own pace. The population of New Zealand is about the same as Sydney, Australia.

New Zealand Part 2: South Island

What a beautiful country! We take the ferry from Wellington over the Cook Straight to Picton, on the South Island. Our cute bright green Jucy van is parked with the other cars, trucks, semis, and boats. The ferry runs eight times a day and probably has between 2500-3000 people. Our first destination is the wine country and Marlborough, the largest grape producing area in the country.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

What a vibrant city!  Buenos Aires is  the capital of Argentina and the cultural center of the country. The birthplace of the tango is, like the dance itself, captivating, seductive, and bustling with excited energy. Atmospheric old neighborhoods are rife with romantic restaurants and thumping nightlife, and Buenos Aires' European heritage is evident in its architecture, boulevards and parks. Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of super retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards. She is referred to as the “Paris of the South.” Buenos Aires is a good jumping off point to visit Antarctica or the Patagonia region.  The flight is 12 hours from Miami and the time is two hours ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Antarctica: Journey to the End of the World

OH WOW! My seventh continent. I anticipated this adventure for years! Remote. Untouched. Spectacular.

An Antarctica expedition cruise is one of the most exhilarating adventures on Earth. There are many reasons for a trip to Antarctica. The wildlife was number one for me. You'll see scores of penguins and whales. Also, an entire museum of colossal and magical ice forms defying description. Our cruise ship was the Ponant’s Le Boreal. Of interest, the weather in January in Antarctica was warmer than home in Columbus, Ohio for a number of the days! Travel should be between November and March.

WOW OH WOW! Cruising is a great way to see a number of islands and have time to enjoy the local ambiance. I recommend a cruise that has overnights on the islands, if you have the time. We spent overnights with two days in the beautiful islands of Santorini and Mykonos. We enjoyed five of the most enchanting islands dotted around the Aegean Sea where culture, history, pristine beaches, and fishing villages are found. We explored the Minoan Palace of Knossos in Crete, considered Europe’s oldest city. Also a visit to Ephesus in Turkey, exploring a UNESCO world heritage site that was built 3000 years ago, was splendid. The small island of Syros rounded out the group with a beautiful harbor town offering good shopping, food and views of the fishing village.
